The effects of 24-hour on-call shifts on residents’ headache-related disability have been studied for several years. The results of this study show that residents exposed to these shifts make more serious medical errors, have more sleep deprivation, and are more likely to experience car accidents. The researchers also tested the effects of 24 Hour on call shifts on mental health, using a variety of questionnaires, including the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale and Headache Impact Test. In addition, they administered the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The results of these questionnaires were compared to those of medical residents who had not yet taken on-call shifts.
This study also demonstrated that 16-hour on-call shifts were more effective than 20-hour shifts. This resulted in the same coverage for the same number of residents and did not compromise on the quality of training. Furthermore, 20-hour on-call shifts may cause resident distraction and affect their ability to learn. The researchers also found that shift work may cause stress and other adverse effects on residents, which can lead to increased patient and staff anxiety.
